The Effect of State Level Soda Tax on Adult Obesity

Amelia Vader amelia.vader@ gmail.com Evans School of Public Affairs MPA 2013 AbstrAct Introduction Rising obesity rates and lower state and local revenues have resulted in more state governments adopting taxes on soda over the last ten years. The intended effects of soda taxes are to reduce the amount of soda purchased and consumed. This research uses data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and state-level soda tax rates above food taxes in order to ascertain whether soda taxes reduce individual body-mass index (BMI). BMI is calculated by using a person’s height and weight and is a validated measure of body fat.
